6 APPLY THE SHELLAC. Now it’s time to add shine and depth to approximate the wet look the piece had while being stained. Do this with a shellac-and-alcohol solution. Add a small amount (10 percent) of the black alcohol-based stain to liquid shellac; here, I used ruby garnet shellac. Fold a cotton cloth into a pad, dip it into the shellac, and apply the moderately wet (not supersaturated) pad evenly to the wood in long, straight passes. Rewet your pad as it dries. Once applied, the product dries instantly, so you can build coats repeatedly. Little by little, you will get the desired depth and finish.
